Racing thoughts, overthinking, and feeling anxious can make it seem like it’s impossible to find a sense of inner calm. We rush through our worries, to-do lists, and then feel tense in our bodies, unsure how to release this tension. Many people who have tried meditation when feeling like this might have felt like it was too challenging or even judged themselves since they couldn’t turn off the switch in their minds.
Calming our minds and bodies sometimes needs something a little different than a seated meditation. Anxiety can arise in our bodies, leading to tension in our shoulders, jaw, having short and shallow breathing, and feeling like our bodies are on edge.
This yoga for anxiety and overthinking practice offers a gentle way to soothe racing thoughts, anxiety, and overall stress with trauma informed guidance and grounding practices to create a well rounded sense of calm in your body and mind.
What to Expect in This Yoga for Anxiety and Overthinking Practice
This class explores grounding, awareness, and gentle movement for moments when you feel anxious or have racing thoughts.
This is also a trauma informed yoga practice, which means everything I offer is an invitation. I welcome you to move at your own pace, skip anything that doesn’t feel supportive, and explore this in any way that feels best for you and your body.
There are no props required, no standing postures, and this is supportive for all experience levels.
In today’s practice, we’ll explore:
- Grounding and Jaw Release (0:30)
We’ll begin today either seated or lying down, your choice. We’ll ground into our space and focus on an object in the room to create a sense of grounding and something for your mind to anchor onto. Then, we’ll explore a gentle jaw release practice since overthinking and anxiety can lead to subtle jaw tension. - Gentle Stretch (5:15)
After, we’ll explore gentle stretches to tend to our bodies and ease tension from stress, exploring poses like neck and shoulder rolls, cat/cow, and supine twist. - Savasana (11:22)
If rest feels supportive in your body at the end of class, I welcome you to join me in a savasana to integrate the practice (no worries if you choose to skip), and we’ll end the class seated. - Closing (14:15)
