Some days, getting out of bed can feel like too much. Maybe your body feels heavy, you have low energy, or the thought of doing anything at all feels overwhelming. This class gives you a few moments to allow full rest and isn’t designed to wake you up or get you out of bed. Embracing rest is enough in this practice.
If you’d like to tend to your nervous system and current state, I welcome you to learn more about in-bed yoga for burnout in this blog post.
Why Rest Is Enough
We might place pressure on ourselves to be more productive, do more, push through. When our bodies and nervous systems are sending signals to rest, it can feel like we’re doing something wrong. But this isn’t a fault, and is actually your body communicating with you. This class honors your body’s messages so that you can allow full permission to rest, which supports your body more than trying to override it.
Offering your body rest on days you feel exhaustion and burnout is one of the most supportive ways to tend to yourself. You’re protecting your energy, honoring your current state, and allowing yourself to simply be.
This class isn’t meant to get you out of bed or find sudden motivation. It’s to remind your body and mind that wherever you are, and whatever you’re feeling, it’s okay, and you’re allowed to have days like today.
What to Expect in This Class
Because this is a trauma-informed yoga practice, everything offered is an invitation. You are always welcome to move at your own pace, take breaks, skip anything that doesn’t feel right, or end early. There is no right or wrong way to explore this class.
You can also do this entire class from bed. There are no props required and it’s supportive for all experience levels.
We’ll explore:
- Grounding and arriving (1:00) — We’ll begin with grounding and settling into the practice. You might choose to place one hand on your heart, the other on your belly. We’ll also explore a grounding practice to settle you into this current moment.
- Gentle movement for exhaustion and burnout (2:30) — We’ll explore gentle stretches for your neck, shoulders, and hands. These aren’t meant to energize you but to release a little bit of stored tension and tend to yourself.
- Rest in any shape you like (6:30) — Class ends with a supportive restful shape. This may feel similar to simply resting in bed, but the intention is different. For a few moments, I welcome you to allow full, complete rest. There is no one to answer to, nothing to plan, nothing to do. This creates a different type of rest for your nervous system compared to scrolling on your phone, watching a show, or reading. Even a few moments of this type of rest is enough.
- Closing (9:00)
