What Is Grounding?

Grounding is a mindfulness technique to bring your attention to the present moment. It’s often used as an anchoring tool if you have racing thoughts or feel disconnected from your body and surroundings. If you’re a trauma survivor, grounding is a beneficial method to regulate your emotions, soothe triggers and anxiety, and allow you to feel more present and embodied.

There are many ways to explore grounding, whether by mindfulness, meditation, affirmations, or even a yoga practice.

What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations are short phrases or statements that support your goals, create positivity in life, or empower you. These are not the same as mantras used in yoga practices, which are a specific word used for chanting.

Here are a few supportive elements of affirmations if you choose to create your own.

  • Focus on the present. (Ex. I am grounded)
  • Short and sweet. The shorter your affirmation, the easier it will be to remember.
  • Positive. This is optional, but it’s easier to find empowerment when your affirmation is positive. An example of negative affirmation: I’m avoiding negativity. A more positive way to express this is: I’m embracing positivity.
  • Avoids toxic positivity. Affirmations aren’t meant to mask or deny emotions. If an affirmation doesn’t feel right in the moment, you can always skip it or try a different one that feels more in line with your current state.

Ultimately, the affirmation you choose will be unique to you. The above list is optional, and what you prefer is always the best choice.

How To Use These Grounding Affirmations

The beauty of affirmations is you get to choose where, how, and when you use them. Below are a few ideas to explore or draw inspiration from:

  • Before, during, or after yoga practices
  • Meditations
  • Write on notes for reminders throughout the day
  • Create a Pinterest board for inspiration
  • Upon rising or before bed

The way you choose to use affirmations will be unique to you and your preferences. There is no wrong way to explore them!
